One hefty blade

Filed under: Tools — cliff @ 4:11 pm

For my new Grizzly saw, I also ordered a Forrest Woodworker II blade.  I’ve never held anything like it, it’s so much heavier than any other blade I’ve ever owned.  The weight, the sharpness of the teeth, the thing just oozes quality.

I’m going to set up the Grizzly with the stock blade and do some comparison cuts with the WW2, perhaps with some other blades I have.  Look for a writeup one day in the Reviews section.

New Grizzly arrives!

Filed under: Tools — cliff @ 5:12 pm

Grizzly was having quite a sale on their G1023 tablesaw, so I ordered one.  It arrived this morning, all I’ve had time to do is unpack the carton and pull the plastic off the saw.  I was kinda nervous buying a machine that I’d never laid hands on, plus the Grizzly drill press I got a few months ago wasn’t superb (but for the price I wasn’t surprised).

I spend months lusting after Powermatic saws in my local Woodcraft.  I really liked the “feel” of the controls, the Jet and Steel City saws just didn’t have a quality sensation when moving the blade around.

Although I’ve only been able to play with it for a few minutes, so far I’m extremely happy with the Grizzly’s quality.  The controls move easily and smoothly, on par with the Powermatic and much better than Jet/SC.  I have to admit that there’s a bit more feel of quality with the PM, mainly because of the really heavy chromed handwheels.  On the other hand, I feel like I got 90% of the quality of the PM at 40% of the cost.

And I can always buy nice handwheels.

Happy new year!

Filed under: Shop Construction — cliff @ 12:32 pm

I was able to take off most of the last two weeks and got lots done on the shop walls.  Three of the walls are done, including the ones with all the doors and windows.  All that’s left is to tear down the last set of storage shelves on the final wall, rebuild them all around the room at 8′, and sheath the final wall.  Then we can start painting!
